Pine View School Update

The school now has a vanity call sign for its amateur radio club. W4PVS went live on 12/13/24. Moving right along, 14 Pine View School students aged 11 to 15 passed their Technician Class license test during a VE session hosted by TARC at the school on 12/16/24. One faculty member and two parents also passed the test. Unfortunately, 7 students will need to try again another time. A great day for ham radio in Sarasota County. Thanks to our VE team of Steve NS4P, Roger N9RM, Tom W4IEE, and yours truly Paul KN4BAR for administering the testing. According to Steve, this marked the largest group of candidates to attend any VE session hosted by TARC to date! And, the $5 testing fee for all 21 students that took the test was paid by an anonymous doner.

ISS in Orbit

Preparations for the ISS contact also continue to progress well. There will be 16 students each asking 2 questions of an astronaut during the 10 minute or so pass of the ISS. Student questions are now under review by the school and will be submitted to the ARISS organization for final approval early in January. Planning for the on-stage activities was done on 12/12/24 and the tentative number and placement of cameras for live streaming and the audio/visual connections were all nailed down during this meeting. Dress rehearsals with the students will begin after the winter break to ensure that everything will go smoothly during the ISS pass. An exact date for the pass should be given by ARISS on or before Jan 12th. The ARRL Club Grant funds should be received on or before 12/31/24. Steve and Frank W2XYZ are scrubbing the shopping list and we are working with DX Engineering to see if we can also obtain any discounts or sponsorships from them or equipment manufacturers. We hope to have everything ordered before Christmas and delivered by January 6th when the students return to school after their winter break. The plan is to have the kids in the ham radio club do the unboxing and assembly of everything….with club member supervision of course.
